A journalist and editor, Greenfield produces a commanding memoir of healing and recovery that doesn't shrink from the suffering she and her family endured, or the often painful details that accompany the process of moving forward, while simultaneously embracing the human capacity for vulnerability and joy. This memoir, written 25 years later, is a heartfelt, touching memoir of grief, of coping and not coping, of the guilt of survival. I am glad to have read this memoir and I will hold it in my heart for a long time.

. Not one of my favorite memoirs, even though the subject losing brother and best friend in car wreck is tragic enough to suit my tastes. Waking up to the terrible aftermath of the accident, she is overwhelmed with her parents' grief and with all that she has lost. In this searing, sparely written, and surprisingly wry memoir, Beth Greenfield shares what happens in 1982 when, as a twelve-year-old, she survives a drunk-driving accident that kills her younger brother Adam and best friend Kristin. As the benign concerns of adolescence are replaced by crushing guilt and grief, Beth searches for hope and support in some likely and not-so-likely places General Hospital, a kindly rabbi, the bottom of a keg , eventually discovering that while life is fragile, love doesn’t have to be.

It is beautifully written, and lushly evocative of the era and region it's describing-- and a crystalline dissection of the trauma process. She and her parents grow close again. If there was any mention of what happened to the driver who hit them, I somehow missed it, and I am curious about that. I think I would have liked to see the author go a little beyond what she wrote -- poss I think that Beth Greenfield did an excellent job of retelling the horror of living through a traffic accident in which her best friend and younger brother were killed and her father gravely injured, and which left her mother in a debilitated emotional state. Ten Minutes from Home exquisitely captures both the heartache of lost innocence and the solace of strength and survival. Throughout the story I was so moved and sometimes saddened by the level of maturity she was forced to display and by the insights she provided - about love, loneliness, friendship, grief, hope etc. I could really feel the emotion that Beth was pulling from her heart and putting on paper.

I think I would have liked to see the author go a little beyond what she wrote -- possibly to include more of the years following, the long-term effects, or -- I'm not sure what, but it seemed incomplete to me, like something was missing. In 1982, a drunk driver causes her family's accident. I highly recommend reading this book. You can definitely tell that she is a writer and tells the story as if This was a great book that I was fortunate enough to win an advanced reader copy thru Read It Foreword. Seeing her again was great, but the reading was very intense as nearly all if not all of us knew that it was about the car accident she and her parents were in that killed her little brother and best friend. Beth's little brother and only sibling, Adam, and her best friend, Kristen, did not survive.

The friends' good-bye wishes prompt me to ruminate on the types of phrases I kept hearing from caring adults—how I, after being forced to mature overnight after the accident, had begun to read into everything that people said to me. Beth chronicles her years after the accident, growing up in a home full of sadness and despair. And what appears on page 99 kind of exemplifies all that.

It gives an insightful glimpse into a family dealing with the unthinkable and the very different ways people deal with grief. Only 12 at the time, Greenfield's life as she knew it-idyllic suburban days of ballet lessons and swimming pools-was over, replaced by years of grief, guilt, intense anger, isolation, and struggles with bulimia and alcoholism. When I got home from the reading, I read half the book in one night staying up till 3 or so and then took about a month off because it was just too painful and beautiful and I was overwhelmed. Yet in the end, Ms. Greenfield allows us to get close enough to truly grasp the pain of the devastating loss that both she and her parents suffered.
