Moral of the story: Don't buy a really expensive electronic from Toshiba. The following features are offered with this unit. We just load up the discs and start recording. Product does not come with warranty unless stated otherwise in product description. You can specify the interval of chapter marks for titles last more than 5 minutes.
Updated May 19, 2010: I ordered this unit in late April of 2010. This information is displayed on the back of the product. The Panasonic was working at that time but finally died a few months ago, so I took the Toshiba out of the box and hooked it up. The advanced portion of the manual covers this. The resume message will appear. I write this not to make people Mad but to Educate.
It's sad that so many Japanese companies have gone downhill so much in customer service. The remote control could definitely stand more contrast in colors for readability, but isn't as bad as I expected; I find it usable. Advantages of downloaded digital manuals are; it's free, you don't lose it, and you can more quickly find what you are looking for in it by searching words in adobe readers. It is more complicated than my old recorder, and it took a little while to learn how to use it, but once I did, it was fine. This is a simple way to set the recording time in blocks of 30 minutes.
Updated review: Since writing the above, a few comments are in order: A few days after using the timer recording function, I encountered problems with the stability of the clock, which began to reset itself. How do I find out the price? The next programme recorder will appear between title 1 and the 'empty' block - as long as there is sufficient space on the disc remaining to record the programme. These menus provide entries to all main functions of the unit. The menus are fairly intuitive; the clock, which has been set manually, is very dependable. Light blue color on black is pretty meh. In a nutshell, the particular unit I received has been extremely reliable and I've had no problems no lockups, no odd clock problems that some are experiencing, no missed programmed recordings, etc.
Playback will start from the beginning of the program that you are currently recording. Loading has been faster than suggested by other reviewers and the quality of the recording is very good! I have not done anything special yet so far, such as disk editing, etc. I particularly like the ability to control the tray from the remote, a feature that many of its competition have chosen to overlook. Oh, Panasonic had a skip button that was programmed for each commercial. Called phone number, they say they are experiencing high call volume from the holidays It's now February. The instant-skip function goes in 30-second increments, up to a total of three minutes at one time.
Ditto with the process of titling recordings, which can only be done after they're made. Other Thoughts: If this thing dies before the extended warranty runs out I will have to really think about possibly getting a different brand instead. After the game, stop recording and finalize. Funny, had the unit for a few years so the problem is not one of age or over use. No chapter button, it wouldbe nice the put in a chapter while playing, but u can't.
